Electronics Engineers for devices and systems produce components and devices, e.g. for information and communications technology, medical technology, measurement and testing technology. They put systems and devices into operation and maintain them.

Electronics Engineers for devices and systems work mainly in medium and large industrial companies which manufacture and maintain information and communications technology equipment, medical equipment, electronic system components, sensors and actuators, microsystems as well as measuring and testing equipment. They are active there in the areas of production, planning, repairs, quality assurance and in the testing and laboratory field and work in workshops or development and testing laboratories. They can also work directly at the customer for maintenance and repairs.

Electronics Engineer for devices and systems is a recognised apprenticeship according to the German apprenticeship law (BBiG). It is assigned to the electrical engineering professional field.

The single job training is made in industry without specialisation or focuses. Advanced training takes place in an application area specified by the training company.

The apprenticeship has a duration of 3½  years.

Electronics Engineers for devices and systems plan and control processes for the production and repair of, for example, information, communications or medical technology equipment. They organise production processes, set up production and testing machines and participate in the quality assurance.

Electronics Engineers for devices and systems collaborate with and support developers for the realisation of orders and the analysis of required functionalities. They manufacture samples and unique items, select mechanical, electrical and electronic components and assemble these into systems.

As well as the installation and configuration of programs and operating systems, the testing of components and the development of system documentation, their tasks also include the production of layouts and production documents.

They are also responsible for repairs. In the customer service and for the repair of equipment, they systematically localise the sources of errors using testing and measurement equipment and diagnostics software. They replace defective parts, test all functions, advise the customer and instruct users.

Electronics Engineers for devices and systems organise the procurement of components and operating equipment. They are able to work with English language documents and to communicate in the English language. They perform their activities in compliance with the applicable regulations and safety regulations independently and agree their work with upstream and downstream areas. They are qualified electricians for the purpose of the accident prevention regulations.
